Klonopin: mechanism of action
The drug inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses and suppresses excitation processes. Being an agonist of GABA receptors, it inhibits the production of neurotransmitters responsible for psychomotor activity. Due to this, a calming, anti-anxiety, and muscle relaxant effect of Klonopin is achieved.
The drug is quickly and completely absorbed in the intestine. The peak concentration of Clonazepam is reached 1-4 hours after oral administration. Most of it (85%) is in a state bound to plasma proteins. The main route of elimination of Klonopin and its metabolites is excretion by the kidneys, so kidney disease can affect the concentration of this drug in the blood.
Klonopin undergoes significant biochemical transformations in the body, and only about 2% of the original drug is excreted in the urine unchanged. Cytochrome C-450 in the liver plays a certain role in its metabolism, so liver disease can affect the concentration of this drug in the blood.
The drug is most often used to relieve muscle hypertonicity, eliminate and prevent seizures, stabilize the psychoemotional background, relieve symptoms of social phobia and other behavioral disorders. In addition to therapeutic purposes, Klonopin is used for premedication in preparation for general anesthesia.
